What do you need?
English
In words
one thousand two hundred fifty
Read as 1,250
Type in English style: 1,500.50. Commas are optional.
How to read the result
- Hyphenate tens and ones: twenty-one, ninety-nine. Hundreds, thousands and millions are separate words.
- British English says one hundred and five. American English says one hundred five. Both are correct.
- Years are read in pairs: 1999 is nineteen ninety-nine. 2005 can be two thousand five or twenty oh five.
- Ordinals change the last word only: twenty-first, one hundredth. Watch first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth and twelfth.
- Decimals use point, then each digit alone: 3.14 is three point one four.
The comma and dot trap
Spanish and English swap the dot and the comma. If you write 1.500 for one thousand five hundred, an English reader sees one point five.
The tool reads English style. When your input looks like Spanish style, it says so and shows how it read it.
| Spanish style | English style |
|---|---|
| 1.500 | 1,500 |
| 3,14 | 3.14 |
