Opening a brainstorm
- Let's throw some ideas around.
- No idea is a bad idea at this stage.
- Let's start with what we know doesn't work.
Contributing an idea
- What if we tried...
- Building on that, we could also...
- Here's a rough idea, bear with me.
Encouraging more ideas
- Any other thoughts?
- Let's keep going, what else?
- Don't filter yourselves yet.
Building on someone else's idea
- I like that, and what if we added...
- That reminds me of...
- Piggybacking on that, we could also...
Closing and choosing
- Let's narrow this down to three.
- Which of these feels the strongest?
- Let's park the rest and move forward with this one.
Judging too early to encouraging
| Judging too early | Encouraging |
|---|---|
| That won't work. | Interesting, let's keep that one and see where it goes. |
| We've tried that before. | What would make that work this time? |
| That's not realistic. | Let's park that for now and come back to it. |
Watch out if you speak Spanish
- English brainstorming culture separates generating ideas from judging them. Saying that won't work too early shuts the room down, even if you're right.
- Piggybacking on and building on are the two most common ways English speakers extend someone else's idea without claiming it as their own.
- Asking any other thoughts? and waiting works better than moving straight to judgment.
- To park an idea means to set it aside for later, not to reject it. Use it instead of saying no directly.

Questions
- How do I contribute without sounding bossy?
- Frame it as a question: what if we tried... It invites the group in instead of announcing a decision.
- What if my English isn't fast enough to brainstorm out loud?
- Say here's a rough idea, bear with me first. It buys you space to think out loud without needing a polished sentence.
